A few weeks ago, Rainn Wilson (also known as Dwight from the Office) tweeted about some children’s music by Renee & Jeremy. I wasn’t familiar with them (hell, I’m not really very familiar with a lot of children’s music), but I decided to give them a try.
After listening to a few of them, I downloaded all 3 albums and have been really enjoying their stuff. The lyrics and music are really fun and it’s the kind of kid’s music that I also don’t mind listening to…which is a bonus for sure, considering the amount of times we’ll have to listen to certain songs when Caleb start picking out favorites. I especially have enjoyed “It’s a Big World” and their “A Little Love” album, which includes covers of songs by Coldplay, REM and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Sarah grew up listening to Raffi and so we’ve also been enjoying singing along with “Singable Songs for the very young.”
And one of my favorites growing up was Jim Valley (former member of Paul Revere & the Raiders). He would always come to our schools and local fairs to perform. I think I probably wore out my “Rainbow Planet” tape from listening to it so much.
I’ll leave you with a video clip of Renee & Jeremy (you can see more here). What was your favorite children’s music growing up? What do you enjoy listening to with your kids?
I had the entire collection of the sesame street alphabet songs on 45’s. (a song for every letter). They were so fun!
I’m so glad you asked! I love good children’s music. As a kid I really didn’t listen to much, but the 2 classics that I had were Burl Ives “Little White Duck” and the awesome album that all cool progressive parents had for their kids, “Free to Be You and Me.” Good stuff. Our boys have loved Justin Roberts, who we’ve also seen in concert a few times (ok, four). We also (ok, me more that the boys) love Dan Zanes, who is also incredible live (one of his concerts is available for streaming on netflix). They Might Be Giants has some pretty fun kids stuff, and you definitely if you’re a fan (I am!) Peter, Paul and Mommy is a good one, too. So glad that you’re giving Caleb a good start with Raffi – that guy is unbeatable. I’ll stop now.
Have you found Casper Babypants yet? It Chris Ballew from Presidents of the United States. Best kid music around.
