I think it was in seminary where I first started to know quite a few people who had kids. Every now and then we’d walk into their apartments and upon seeing the plethora of toys strewn all around their apartment, I remember thinking to myself “Damn. I’m NEVER going to have a house like this” while I silently judged them.
Oh my.
If only I knew what it would be like…
The above photo is really not bad…I know that. So no need to leave a bunch of comments just stating the obvious. Our house has been WAY messier as well, and so I think I have a sense of how bad it can be (although, I’m guessing the “quatro” Legos are much easier to pick up than buckets of the real deal).
But even if the 25 year old version of myself walked into a house like this, I would have thought to myself, “Oh my gosh. This is ridiculous…just pick up the damn toys. What’s your problem?!”
And sometimes I do. Sometimes I want to go to bed in a clean, organized home, so that I don’t have to deal with it in the morning. But most days…we just leave it like this. I’m too tired at the end of the day to want to really mess with picking up and organizing toys.
And now I get it. I really do. Even though I often stay up too late…and don’t get the amount of sleep I really need…I really do look forward to resting my head down on my Tempur-Pedic contoured pillow and drifting asleep in my bed. And if picking up these toys is the only thing standing in my way…? Yah. My pillow will generally win.
So, I just want to apologize to all those seminary friends with kids. Sorry for judging you. Sorry for being annoyed with your toy-infested living rooms. Those were small apartments…where else were your kids supposed to play? I get it now.
